The build process is recorded as series of discrete steps with each having a fixed size description/title and detailed instructions defining the actions that are necessary to complete the stage of manufacture. Of particular relevance when defining the number of manufacturing steps is the consideration that a manufacturing resource may be associated with each step and a setup time and run time (based upon a defined batch production quantity). Defined manufacturing resource is associated with both a setup and run-time labour cost, which enables the calculation of a combined process step labour cost. There is obviously a direct correlation between the number of process steps defined for a product or sub-assembly and the level of refinement that can be anticipated in the calculated labour cost. It is entirely feasible that ongoing update of the build instructions could incorporate within the step-by-step stages of manufacture details of any error or fault fixing situations that arise and which might then be better handled in subsequent manufacturing requests. Orbitall does maintain a release level for process instructions and this is recorded whenever a production order (often referred to as a works order or routing) is produced. The latter is a site specific document that may include both details of the product identifier component requirements and a statement of the steps involved in the build process. Such documents are used as documents that travel through the production area with a design that permits both production and quality control information to be recorded. Many manufacturing processes ultimately conclude with some form of quality control evaluation and Orbitall does incorporate an ability to define a linked Excel workbook that may be used to record pertinent measurements or visual checks. These Excel workbooks incorporate formulae that may be used to identify the acceptability of individual measurements or observations and once completed may be saved/printed as a permanent record with broad access available within the business.
